A merchant and an affiliate join forces when the affiliate registers itself with an affiliate network or when it is acquired by a merchant. The affiliate then integrates the merchant’s advertising (text links, GIF/Flash banner or HTML adverts) into its own websites.
From this point on, users have the option of reaching the merchant’s website via the affiliate’s webpage. With a click on the advert, a cookie is dropped onto the user’s browser. This cookie recognises the user when a successful action/purchase has been completed and allocates the mediating affiliate with a commissionable transaction. The affiliate can follow the view, click, lead and sales rates as well as view open and concluded provisions via his network login.
